4a. Lilium humboldtii subsp. humboldtii

Lilium bloomerianum Kellogg; L. canadense Linnaeus var. humboldtii Baker; L. canadense var. puberulum Torrey

Bulbs off white, occasionally flecked with purple; scales unsegmented; stem roots absent. Racemes 1–33(–40)-flowered. Flowers: sepals and petals orange, with magenta spots distributed distally or more proximally; pollen rust, rust-brown, rust-orange, occasionally to warm tan, becoming yellowish.

Flowering summer (mid Jun--early Aug). Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P. & C. Douglas) forest and chaparral openings; 600--1100 m; Calif.

Subspecies humboldtii is distributed from Tehama County south to Calaveras County; reports from farther south are erroneous. An anomalous population documented by A. A. Heller early in the twentieth century as occurring near the Sacramento River at valley elevations (ca. 100 m) in Butte County is unconfirmed and unlikely to be relocated.
