A single collection (Davidson 1617, NY) found along Big Rock Creek in Los Angeles County in 1900, and the type of subsp. polygonoides, gathered in San Luis Obispo County, are from disjunct populations. This variety is sometimes difficult to differentiate from E. davidsonii.
