Basal leaves: petiole broadly winged; blade obovate to broadly oblanceolate, usually 1.5-3 cm broad, apex obtuse, puberulent to subpilose and stipitate-glandular on both surfaces, rarely sub-glabrous. Calyces 15-18(-20) mm, glandular-pubescent. Cap-sules ca. 8(-10) mm. 2n = 48.
Flowering spring. Open and often rocky, mainly deciduous woodlands; 0-1000 m; Ga., Md., N.J., N.C., Pa., S.C., Tenn., W.Va.
