20b. Hypnum revolutum var. ravaudii (Boulay) Ando, Lindbergia. 8: 62. 1982.

Hypnum ravaudii Boulay, Fl. Crypt. Est, Musc., 267. 1872 (as ravaudi); H. filiforme Kindberg; H. revolutum var. dolomiticum Mönkemeyer

Plants relatively small. Stems 2-3(-5) cm, regularly pinnate, branches 0.2-0.5+ cm. Stem leaves broadly ovate-oblong, not plicate, 0.5-1 mm; margins plane or sometimes revolute basally; costa less distinct; medial laminal cells 25-40 × 4 µm.

Capsules mature Jul-Sep. Open sites, earth, rock faces, epiphytic on tree bases, logs in forest; moderate to high elevations; Alta., B.C.; Colo.; Europe; e Asia; Antarctica.

Distribution for variety ravaudii is based on that given by H. Ando (1973), but it is doubtless infrequently scattered through the range of the species, producing sporophytes in summer. The variety is troublesome to determine because of its lack of the characteristic revolute leaf margins (except sometimes near the base), and the costa is difficult to discern.
