Stems: spines at nodes 1(-3); internodal prickles absent to moderately dense. Leaf blades 2.5-3.5(-4) cm, base truncate to cordate, surfaces sparsely to densely pubescent, ± glandular-puberulent, lobes oblong-rounded, margins with 5-9 crenate dentations. Peduncles 3-7 mm. Pedicels 1.5-5 mm, glabrous or stipitate-glandular and pilose. Flowers: hypanthium greenish white, narrowly tubular but constricted above ovary, 3.7-6 mm, finely pilose; sepals greenish white or ± pinkish, oblong, 4-6 mm, apex obtuse to rounded, finely pilose; petals whitish, oblong-oblanceolate, 2.2-3.5 mm, base cuneate, apex rounded, erose; filaments 1.7-2.5 mm; styles 7-8.5 mm. 2n = 16.
Flowering Mar-May. Stream banks, lower hillsides, moist woods, thickets, forest openings; 500-1500 m; B.C.; Idaho, Mont., Oreg., Wash.
