Pygmy manzanita

Shrubs prostrate, mound-forming, 0.1-0.5 m; bark on older stems gray or red-gray, rough or shredded. Leaves: petiole to 1 mm; blade oblong-elliptic, 0.5-1.2 × 0.3-0.7 cm, base cuneate to obtuse.
Flowering winter-early spring. Podsol soils in pygmy pine forests; of conservation concern; 100-200 m; Calif.
Subspecies mendocinoensis is known from the coast of central Mendocino County. It intergrades with subsp. nummularia in morphology. Further analysis of its relationships is needed.
