FNA | Family List | FNA Vol. 28 | Brachytheciaceae | Eurhynchiastrum

1b. Eurhynchiastrum pulchellum var. barnesii (Renauld & Cardot) Ignatov, Arctoa. 17: 136. 2009.

Eurhynchium strigosum var. barnesii Renauld & Cardot, Rev. Bryol. 15: 72. 1888; E. pulchellum var. barnesii (Renauld & Cardot) H. A. Crum, Steere & L. E. Anderson; E. tayloriae R. S. Williams

Stems 6-13 cm. Stem leaves 1.2-2.6 × 0.6-1.8 mm. Branch leaves strongly plicate, 1-1.9 × 0.4-0.8(-1) mm.

Soil, rock, decaying logs; moderate elevations (500 m); Alta., B.C.; Alaska, Calif., Colo., Idaho, Mont., Wash.

Variety barnesii seems to be relatively rare and endemic, probably deserving the status of species, though a preliminary molecular analysis did not find it outside the variation in small-sized plants (M. S. Ignatov et al. 2008). The separation of var. barnesii from the large expressions of var. pulchellum needs additional attention.
