Plants decumbent to prostrate, branching from base, mat-forming, 0.5–3 dm. Leaf blades usually oblanceolate, 10–20 × 3–6 mm, broadest beyond middle. Inflorescences: branching dichasial (1–3-flowered) or lateral. 2n = 18.

Flowering summer (Jun–Aug). Dry, rocky slopes, road embankments, dry to moist, rich woods; 70–900 m; Ala., Ark., Del., D.C., Ga., Ill., Ind., Kans., Ky., La., Md., Mass., Miss., Mo., N.J., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Okla., Pa., Tenn., Tex., Va., W.Va.
