Stems mostly greater than 10 dm, usually 1 main stem. Leaf blades lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, base attenuate. 2n = 20.
Flowering summer. Wet soil, ditches, thickets, low fields; 50–1500 m; Ala., Ark., Fla., Ga., Ky., La., Miss., Mo., N.C., Okla., S.C., Tenn., Tex., Va.; introduced in West Indies (Cuba, Dominican Republic).
