Physalis variovestita Waterfall, Rhodora 60: 137. 1958; P. cinerascens (Dunal) Hitchcock var. variovestita (Waterfall) B. L. Turner

Hairs dendroid-stelliform, to 1 mm, glandular, occasionally also jointed, branched or simple, 2–4 mm, glandular. Corollas with deep purple-black spots. Fruiting calyces 25–35 mm wide. 2n = 24.

Flowering Mar–Oct. Disturbed areas in sand; 0–20 m; Tex.

Variety variovestita is found in extreme southern Texas, north along the coast to Aransas County.
