Plants annual or perennial, rhizomatous or not. Leaves: distal leaf sheaths without a tooth. Achenes prominent, apex often constricted proximal to tubercle. Tubercles not dorsiventrally compressed, similar in cross section to achene.
Species ca. 12 (3 in the flora): tropical to temperate latitudes worldwide, primarily neotropical.
