Herbs, perennial, black glands absent. Leaves persistent (base not articulated). Flowers 40–70 mm diam.; sepals persistent, 5; petals persistent, 5; stamens persistent, 150, in 5 fascicles, fascicles usually distinct, rarely 1 pair connate; ovary (4–)5-merous; placentation axile; styles ± appressed, bases ± connate or distinct; stigmas ± broadly capitate. Seeds ± carinate.
Species 2 (1 in the flora): e North America, ne, e Asia.
The other species in the section, Hypericum przewalskii Maximowicz, is endemic to China.
