Perennial herbs or shrubs with opposite, rarely alternate, elliptic to deltoid, usually serrate and glandular leaves. Head in corymbs. Involucral bracts eximbricate or subimbricate. Florets white or lavender, usually funnel-shaped, sometimes differentiated into tube and limb. Style base often enlarged; style branch appendages papillose, usually glandular. Achenes prismatic or fusiform, setose glandular. Pappus of many scabrid, usually deciduous bristles.
About 290 species in South and North America, the West Indies, but mainly in Central America. One weedy species naturalized in Taiwan.
