Perennial herbs or shrubs, sometimes climbers. Leaves opposite, sometimes alternate or verticillate. Head in corymbs, rarely solitary. Involucral bracts imbricate; tips often herbaceous or colored. Receptacle flat or convex, sometimes paleate. Florets white, blue, lavender or purple, cylindric, glandular, often hairy. Anther appendages linear, sometimes papillose. Achenes prismatic, ribs 5, rarely 3, setose, sometimes glandular. Pappus of many scabrid bristles.
About 165 species in the New World, one weedy species naturalized in Taiwan.
