Annual, biennial, or perennial herbs. Leaves dentate to runcinate-pinnatifid or pinnatisect. Heads in elongate, spike-like inflorescences. Involucral bracts in two unequal series. Florets blue, occasionally white or pink. Achenes obovoid-obconical, 3-5-angled, glabrous. Pappus of minute, rounded-obtuse scales.
Six species in Europe, Asia, northern Africa, the Mediterranean region and southwestern Asia; one species occasionally naturalized in Taiwan.
