Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves opposite, pinnatisect or simple. Heads solitary, long pedunculate, radiate. Ray florets neutral, variously colored; disc florets numerous, yellowish; filaments hirsute. Achenes of disc florets linear, more or less fusiform-tetragonal, usually compressed, apically usually attenuate into a beak. Pappus of two or four (to eight), barbellate or scabrid hispid awns.
About 25 species mostly in tropical America; one species cultivated and naturalized in Taiwan.
