Annual or perennial herbs; stems erect. Leaves simple, alternate, lyrate-pinnatifid to toothed. Heads in terminal corymbs, nodding during anthesis, becoming erect, discoid, florets all of one type; involucral bracts in a single series, coherent, large bracts subtended by a series of smaller, distinct, often purple bracts; receptacle naked. Achenes cylindric, weakly 8-10-ribbed; pappus of many fine bristles.
About 24 species distributed in tropical Africa, Madagascar, the Mascarene islands and Yemen; one weedy species widely naturalized in Taiwan.
