Shrubs or perennial or annual herbs; leaves alternate, entire to pinnatisect. Heads in panicles or lax corymbs, small, radiate. Involucral bracts in two rows, broad. Ray florets 5, small, minutely 2- (or 3-) lobed; white; disc floret numerous, whitish, all but the marginal row dehiscent as unit. Anthers connate. Achenes of ray florets obovoid, orbicular, or broadly ellipsoid, hairy, strongly compressed, connate to the subtending bract and two adjacent paleae and disc florets. Pappus of 2 or 3 awns, 2 scales, or absent.
About 16 species in North and Central America, northern South America and the West Indies; one widespread weed naturalized in Taiwan.
