玉山鐵桿蒿 (玉山紫菀)

Perennial erect herbs with stoloniferous rhizomes. Stems terete, slender, 10-40 cm tall, minutely puberulous, unbranched or branching in inflorescence. Radical leaves rosulate, long petiolate, oblong, 13-25 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded-cuneate elongate into winged petiole, margins sparsely mucronulate-serrate with 2 or 3 teeth, pubescent on both surfaces, petiole 2-5.5 cm long, sometimes withering at anthesis. Cauline leaves evenly scattered, 3-nerved, middle ones linear-oblong or lanceolate, 3-4 cm long, 7-9 mm broad, acuminate to caudate-acuminate often falcate near apex, base attenuate-cuneate, short-petiolate, margins mucronulate-serrate with 2-4 teeth, pubescent on both surfaces. Upper leaves gradually smaller. Heads few to many in loose corymbs or panicles, 1.2-1.5 cm across. Involucre campanulate to hemispheric, 2.5-3.5 mm tall, 5-6 mm across, peduncle slender, 3-14 mm long, densely puberulous, bracts herbaceous, green or purplish, 3 or 4 seriate, entire, obtuse or acute, linear-lanceolate, margins narrowly membranaceous, ciliate, sparsely hirsute on outside, inner bracts gradually longer 2.5-3.5 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, outer bracts 2-2.5 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide. Achenes oblong, compressed, 2-3 mm long, brown, sericeous. Fl. Jul-Sep.

NANTOU: Patungkuan, Ohwi s. n. 1933. CHIAYI: Yushan, Sasaki s. n. 1909 (TYPE!). KAOHSIUNG: Hsiangyang, Peng 8630.

Endemic; alpine areas on high mountains, 3,300-3,700 m.
