Rhizome creeping, slender, subterete, 1 cm in diameter. Pseudostem 30-60 cm. leaf-blade oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 15-30 × 4-8 cm, base obtuse, apex acuminate, thinly pubescent to almost glabrous on both surfaces, petiole short; ligule bilobed, auriculate, membranous. Inflorescence 1-3 on separate peduncle arising from rhizome, many-flowered, 4-5 cm. Peduncle 2-10 cm. Bracts lanceolate, 2 cm. base sheath-like. Calyx tubular, 1 cm, apex 3-toothed, base hirsute. Corolla tube slender, 2-3 cm; lobes red to purple, 2 cm, the dorsal one up to 1 cm wide, concave, slightly broader than the others. Labellum variable, obovate to subrhombic, 22 × 20 mm, 3-lobed, central lobe obovate-oblong, 1.0-1.5 cm, apex round to emarginate, red to deep violet, lateral lobes smaller, apex and margin violet, base yellowish. Anther linear, subcylindric, 1 cm, connective appendix linear, 1 cm, curved. Ovary hirsute. Capsules oblong, triangular, with persistent bracts and bracteole, dehiscent loculicidally, pericarp fleshy, orange-red to purple red inside. Seeds black or dark brown, aril white, sac-like.
