屯鹿月桃

Languas tonrokuensis (Hayata) Sasaki, Trans. Nat. Hist. Soc. Form. 14: 86. 1924.

Plant 2.5-4.5 m. Leaves sessile to subsessile; blade 55-82 × 12-17 cm, oblong to lanceolate, tip acuminate, base cuneate, subcoriaceous, glabrous on both sides except for the margin; ligule 1.5 cm long, entire or bilobed, coriaceous, hairy on outer surface. Inflorescence a thyrse, curvingly erect or ascending, flower-bearing part 24-45 cm long, with spinous hair, lower rachilla 0.5-2.0 cm long, with 2 flowers, upper ones with 1 flower, without bract. Flowers pedicellate; bracteole white, 3.5 cm long, tip pink, folded around the bud, glabrous, deciduous; calyx white, tip pink, tubular, 2.5-2.7 cm long, shortly 5-lobed and deeply split unilaterally, minutely pubescent on outer surface; corolla white, tube 3 cm long, lobes oblong, outer surface sparsely pubescent, margin ciliate, dorsal lobe 5 × 4.5 cm, laterals 5 × 3.5 cm; labellum deep yellow, involute, 5.5 × 5.0 cm, with red stripes and spots in the center, apex emarginate; staminodes yellow, linear, 0.7 cm long, with red stripes; anther 1.5-1.8 cm long; filament band-form, 1.2-1.4 cm long; stigma funnel-form, apex densely hairy; style slender, sparsely hairy; epigynous glands massive, yellow-brown, united on one side, 0.4 cm long; ovary yellowish-green, pubescent, 0.9 × 0.8 cm. Fruits capsular, orange-red, suppressed globose, 1.2-1.5 × 1.6-2.2 cm, faintly costate, with spinous hair. Seeds 16-27, angular; aril white, membranous.

Endemic, at low altitude of northern Taiwan.
