  • Orchis alpestre (Fukuy.) S. S. Ying

    Plants 5-17 cm tall. Tuberoids nearly globose, 5-10 mm across. Stem slender, pale green, angled, glabrous, with 1-2 sheaths at base. Leaves usually 2, cauline, alternate, sometimes nearly radical, linear-oblong or lanceolate, 3-6 cm long, 5-10 mm wide, apex acute, decurrent at base. Spikes pedunculate; peduncle 2-4 cm long; bracts green or purple, chartaceous, lanceolate, 6-7 mm long, apex acuminate, entire; pedicle and ovary 5-8 mm long, nearly straight. Flowers 1-4, subsecund, whitish purple or rose with purple or red dots on lip, nearly spreading; dorsal sepal ovate-oblong, concave, 4-6 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, apex acute, contracted at base; lateral sepals obliquely ovate-oblong, 5-7 mm long, 2.5-4 mm wide, apex acute, contracted at base, more or less keeled abaxially; petals usually covering column and connivent with dorsal sepal forming hood, obliquely ovate-lanceolate, 4-5 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, apex obtuse, strongly contracted at base; lip rose or pale purple, white or sometimes tinged pale yellow at base, dotted with purple, obtriangular or nearly orbicular, 5-9 mm long, 4.5-5.5 mm wide, narrow at base, gradually dilated and 3-lobes from middle or lower portion, lateral lobes triangular, 1.5-2 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, apex obtuse, terminal lobe ovate-quadrangular, 3-4 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, truncate, emarginate or bifid and sometimes shortly aristate at indentation, spur clavate-cylindrical, pointing downward, 4-5 mm long, 1-2 mm in diam., slightly attenuate, obtuse at apex; column 2-3 mm tall; anther locules clavate, 1.5-2 mm long; pollinia ovoid, 0.5-0.7 mm long; viscidium ovoid; stigma with 3 confluent surfaces, concave, 1-1.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide.

    Endemic, alpine grasslands or talus screes at 3,000-3,800 m altitude.
