  • Begonia kotoensis Hayata

    Plant epipetric or sometimes terrestrial; evergreen; acaulenscent with creeping rhizomes, monoecious. Rhizomes to ___ cm long, to 19 mm across, glabrous. Stipules persistent, ovate to triangular, apex mucronate or acuminate, margins entire and often reflex, midrib raised ca. 2 mm abaxially, to 21 mm long, 18 mm wide, progressively hirsute toward the apex. Leaves many, all basal, thick, asymmetric, very rarely peltate, broadly ovate to orbicular, undivided, apex mucronate to acuminate, base cordate, margins irregularly denticulate or serrulate, 7-26 cm long, 6-21 cm wide, glabrous adaxially, remotely scaberulous abaxially; venation palmate; petioles, 7-31 mm long, 10 mm across, glabrous or nearly so. Inflorescences arise from rhizomes, 17-53 cm long, glabrous; peduncles (inflorescence axis) to 41 cm long, 9 mm across, erect. Bracts caducous, orbicular to oblate, apex retuse to apiculate, margins entire and often reflex, to 14 mm long, 18 mm wide, glabrous. Flowers of both sexes white to pinkish, glabrous. Staminate flowers: tepals 4, outer two obovate to orbicular, 9-25 mm long, 8-22 mm wide, inner two oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, 8-23 mm long, 4-11 mm wide; androecium zygomorphic; stemans 39-58, (shape), yellow, filaments free, 1.2-2.3 mm long; anthers broadly oblong, 1.4-1.8 mm long, 0.9-1.3 mm across. Pistillate flowers: tepals 5(-6), oblanceolate to broadly obovate, unequal, the largest 8-21 mm long, 7-18 mm wide, the smallest 7-18 mm long, 4-8 mm wide; ovary white to tinged pinksih when blooming, inferior, glaborus; styles 3, yellow, free, 2-lobed / forked once, 4.3-4.8 mm long; stigmas, in a band and spiraled. Fruits capsular, dehiscence, nodding, trigonous, subequally 3-winged, abaxial wing transversely elliptic, 6-10 mm long, 9-13 mm wide, lateral wings 3-8 mm long, 8-12 mm wide; locules 3, axile placentation, placental branches 2 per locule.
