Terrestrial herbs to 60 cm tall. Roots 5-7 mm thick. Rhizomes ascending. Pseudobulbs cylindrical, 8-20 cm long, 10-15 mm wide, naked or enclosed by leaf sheaths. Leaves 5-7 at apex of pseudobulb, oblanceolate or oblong, 20-30 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, coriaceous, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate, decurrent into petiole 5-12 cm long, entire, midrib elevated on lowe surface. Peduncle 2 or 3 arising from middle and lower part of pseudobulb, erect or ascending, 8-20 cm long, rachis ca. 10 cm long; bracts lanceolate, 2-2.5 cm long; pedicel and ovary ca. 3.5-4 cm long. Flowers 6-10, green to brownish green, 5-6 cm in diam.; sepals linear-oblong, 3.5-4 cm long, ca. 6 mm wide, acute, lateral ones slightly oblique; petals often with purplish red midrib, obliquely-ligulate, 3 cm long, 6 mm wide, acute; lip ovate-lanceolate, 2.5 cm long, 12-16 mm wide, 3-lobed, lateral libes triangular-semiorbicular, erect, with transverse red lines and spots, midlobe ovate-triangular, reflexed, caudate at apex, with irregular reddish patches, disc with 2 longitudinal keels between lateral lobes; column yellowish, 1.3 cm long, arched, with reddish lines on ventral side; anther semispherical, yellow.

Endemic. Broadleaved forests in the eastern and northern mountains, relatively rare.

The flowers of var. syunitianum are more similar to the typical variety in length/width ration than var. aspidistrifolium. This variety appears to be a larger form of the typical variety, with larger stature and flowers. In addition to size, it differs from the typical phase by its greenish flowers with distinctly caudate lip. In Taiwan, it flowers from January to March, separate from the above two varieties.
