Gastrodia nipponica auct. non Tuyama: S. S. Ying
Rhizome tuberous, conical or ellipsoid, dull brownish, 3-10 cm long, 0.8-1.5 cm thick, squamate, pilose. Stem stout, dark brown, 1-5 cm long, 0.3-0.5 cm in diam., densely or distantly noded and sheathed. Raceme condensed, bearing 1-4 nearly tufted flowers; bracts broadly ovate, 3-4 mm long. Flowers bell-shaped, dark brown, 1.3-1.6 cm across; pedicel and ovary 12-15 mm long; sepals connate at base, trilobed at apex, 12-15 mm long, smooth outside, free lobes spreading, dorsal sepal shorter than lateral ones, connate for 1/2 of its length with lateral sepals, nearly rounded at apex, lateral sepals joined basally for 1/3 of their length, recurved, obtuse at apex; petals attached to sepal tube, ovate-lanceolate, thickened at base; lip rhombic, unlobed, fleshy, 5-6 mm long, 6mm wide, entire at margins, apex blunt and somewhat caudate, base abruptly abbreviated, with a pair of stalked calli, disc thickened and white-pubescent, with 2 carinate protuberances near apex, protuberances lamellate and parallel toward apex of lip, divergent and lowered toward lateral side of disc; column 6 mm long, widest at middle, laterally winged toward apex; column-foot conspicuous, bearing a pair of sessile, subglobose protuberance next to stalked calli at base of lip. Capsules cylindrical, 3.3 cm long, with an elongated pedicel, up to 50 cm long.
