Perennial, sometimes annual. Panicle open to lossely contracted. Spikelets several-mny-flowered, ovaate to rotund, laterally compressed or globose, glumes cordate to narrowly ovate; lemmas orbicular to oblate, foldered or flattened, chartaceous to coriaceous with broad membranous margins on upper half or all along, clasping floret above and sometimes elaborated into basal auricles or lateral wings, gibbous on the back and keeled though sometimes indistinctly so, 5-11-nerved, obtuse cuspidate or bilobed, with or without a mucro; palea sometimes much shorter than lemma, lanceolate to orbicular; stemens 1-3. Hilum round to elliptic; endosperm sometimes soft.

Temperate Eurasia and South America.

Species 20. Grassland and open places, dry or moist soils. B. maxima and other speies with delicate trembling panicles are grown as ornamentals.
