Perennial. Panicle usually open. Spikelets 2-flowered plus rhachilla extension, the lower floret sessile; rhachilla well developed and hairy; glumes mostly equal and as long as or much exceedubg fkirets; lemmas hyaline to polished cartilaginous, rounded, 4-toothed to denticulately truncate, with inconspicuous straight or weakly geniculate dorsal awn from base or lower half; callus pubescent to conspicuously bearded. Endosperm solid.

Species ± 40. Temperate regions throughout world. Meadows, moorland and woodland.
