Perennial; leaves with cross-nerves in the larger species. Panicle copious, or narrow and almost raceme-lilke. Spikelets several-many-flowerd, terminating in a small floret; glumes very small to almost as long as adjacent lemma and of similar texture, 1--nerved; lemma herbaceous, membranous or thinly coriaceous, 5-11-nerved, acute, obtuse or 3-5-toothed; stamens 2-3.
Species ± 40. Temperate regions throughout the world.
Wet places and shallow water.
