Annual or perennia; leaf-blades linear to narrowly lanceolat, hervaceous, with smooth or scabrid margins. Panicle often with simple raceme-like primary branches. Spikelets with 1 fertile floret above 2 sterile lemmas, strongly laterally compressed; sterile lemmas coriaceous, fertile lemma coriaceous, strongly keeled, clasping lateral nerves of palea, stamens 6.
Tropics and subtropics.
Species more or less 20. Humid forest and open swamps. O. sativa (Rice) is cultivated throughout the area of the genus, usually in flooded fields though some races are grown on dry land.
