Tall rhizomatous perennial reed; leaves cauline, the blades deciduous; ligule a very short membrane with long ciliate margin. Panicle large, plumose. Spikelets with lowest floret male or empty; glumes shorter than lowest lemma, 3-5-nerved; floret callus linear, plumose; lemmas hyaline, 1-3-nerved, glabrous, long caudate, entire; palea 2/3 length of lemma.

Cosmopolitan.

Species 3-4. Marshes and riversides. Used for mats and thatching.
