Perenmals; culms slender but hard. Leaf blades narrow. Inflorescence with spikelets in alternate pairs along the hairy, slender, fragile rachis of solitary spike-like racemes, small, laterally compressed, with one broad side turned to rachis. Spikelets paired the one sessile and the other pedicelled. Sessile spikelet with glumes and lemmas thinly membranous-hyaline; lower glume convex, not keeled; upper glume somewhat longer, strongly compressed-keeled, notched at apex with a long, very slender thread-like awn; lower lemma and lower palea wanting, or lower lemma present and accompanied by a lower palea or not; lower lemma convex, muticous, barren or with 3 stamens, rarely bisexual; lower palea nerveless; upper lemma strongly convex, keeled, with a long, very slender, thread-like awn from the shortly and acutely 2-lobed apex; upper palea nerveless; lodicules absent; ovary small, the styles 2, free, the stigmas plumose, exserted apically. Caryopsis ellipsoid, ventral side less convex.

About two specie from India to China and Japan.

Two species are found in Taiwan.
