Sacciolepis Nash

Annuals; culms hollow; ligule membranaceous; leaf balde falte. Inflorescence a spike-like raceme or a contracted panicle, branched from all sides. Spikelets ovate-oblong, gibbous, otherwise terete or slightly laterally compressed, 2-flowered, muticous, articulated with pedicel; rachilla not produced, articulate above lower lemma, not or only slightly inflated; lower palea smaller, membranaceous; upper lemma much shorter than spikelet; upper glume and lower lemma as long as spikelet or upper glume slightly shorter; upper glume inflated at base, 7-11-veined; lower lemma not or only little inflated; lower palea smaller, membranaceous; upper lemma shorter than upper glume, papery, glossy and slightly indurated at maturity, with opaque margins embracing upper plaea nearly to apex; upper palea as long or slightly shorter, of same texture; stamens 3; ovary glabrous, style 2, free, stigmas pulmose, exserted below apex. Caryopsis free between upper palea and upper lemma. Together forming a false fruit with knob-like stipe.

About 30 species in tropics, with most species in Africa. One species in Taiwan.
