Annual or perennial. Raceme oblong to linear, with single spikelets on fragile rhachis. Spikelets 2-flowered plus short rhachilla extension; glumes linear, membranous, 1-nerved, sharply keeled to the base, acuminate or awned; lemmas sharply keeled, pectinate spinulose on the keel, tapering to an awn.
Species 4. Eastern Europe to central Asia; also spain and South Africa.
Sandy soils and dry hillsides. S. cereale is grown as a cereal in most temperate regions.
