Tall tufted perennial. Ligule scarious. Inflorescence a large panicle contracted about primary branches, the spikelets all alike, immature at emergence. Spikelets tiny, 2-flowered plus rhachilla extension which sometimes bears a reduced floret, laterally compressed, falling entire with pedicel attached though subsequently disarticulating; glumes much shorter than spikelet, hyaline, 0-1-nerved, obtuse; lower floret barren without a palea, its lemma membranous, 1-3-nerved, glabrous, acuminate; upper floret bisexual, its lemma thingly 3-nerved, ciliate on margins, acuminate; stamen 2-3. Caryopsis subglobose, the hilum puntiform.
