Annuals; culm weak, rooting from basal node, 15-50 cm tall. Blade glabrous, ovate to ovate-lanceolate,
3-8 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide; sheath slightly shorter than internode, villous on margins; ligule
membranaceous, ciliate at apex, ca.1 mm long. Panicle terminal or axillary, to 15 cm long; axils pubescent.
Spikelets 3.5-5 mm long, slightly laterally compressed; glumes unequal, strongly 3-5-veined,
acuminate; lower glume 2/3 as long as spikelet, with a distinct internode between it and upper glume;
upper glume and lower lemma equal; lower lemma 5-veined, enclosing a palea and sometimes a staminate
flower; upper lemma chartaceous-indurate, 2-2.5 mm long, obtuse, stipitate and bearing 2 scars ca.
base; anther ca. 1.6 mm long.
