Tall, stout, tufted perennial; culms to 2 m or more tall, S mm in diameter, solid; sheaths loose, keeled, glabrous, to 20 cm long; ligule about O.5 mm high, upper margin ciliate; blades folded or flat, 30-60 cm long, 4-10 mm wide; scabrous on margins. Inflorescence a large, erect panicle, 20-25 cm long, central axis with whorls of simple racemes, the branches very slender. Spikelets in pairs;the lower spikelet: sessile, fertile, glabrous, with spines on the back of the glumes; lower glume 3-nerved, upper glume 1-nerved, lower floret only consisting of a lemma, upper floret with membranous lemma and palea; lodicules 2, truncate; the pedicelled spikelet : sterile, lower glume with spines on back.
