Note: Due to confusion between the homonyms Marsdenia grandiflora (Decne.) Choux (a synonym of S. grandiflora) and of M. grandiflora Norman (an African sp), the presence of the genus has been wrongly indicated for Africa in the literature. We follow the draft treatment by Stevens for Fl. Madagasc., who notes that the species are not all clearly delimited. More work is needed and we believe that there is at least one undescribed species.
