Plants biennial. Taproots fleshy, napiform, conical, oblong, or obovoid, 7-10 cm in diam. Basal leaves with a slender, nonfleshy petiole, midvein not flattened; leaf blade 5-30 cm; margin irregularly dentate or pinnatisect with crisped, incised lobes. Fl. Apr-May, fr. May-Jun. 2n = 36*.
Cultivated as a vegetable and for forage. Throughout China [distribution outside China uncertain].
