Fronds larger, 2-pinnate, herbaceous, both surfaces hairy; basal pinnules stalked, lobes acuminate at apex.
Forests, shrublands; 100-1000 m. Anhui, Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Zhejiang [N India, Japan, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Vietnam].
Material in the Natural History Museum, London (BM) named as the hybrid Microlepia marginata × M. strigosa seems to be a good match with this taxon, and it has been suggested that var. bipinnata is of hybrid origin (Shimura, Taxon 27(1): 41. 1979).
