Trees to 20 m tall. Leaves 20-35 cm, 7-11-foliolate; leaflet blades broadly elliptic or sometimes ovate, lanceolate, obovate, or oblanceolate, 5.5-14.5(-17) × 2.5-7(-8.5) cm, abaxially glaucous and finely papillate, secondary veins 9-12 on each side of midvein, reticulate veinlets abaxially usually ± conspicuous and ± loose, base in lateral leaflets obtuse to nearly rounded and in terminal leaflet cuneate, margin entire, apex acuminate. Inflorescences 11-18 cm. Flowers (4 or)5-merous. Sepals ca. 0.5 mm. Petals green to greenish yellow but drying brown, 2.5-3 mm, outside glabrous to sparsely puberulent, inside sparsely to densely villous. Ovary glabrous; ovules 1 per carpel. Fruit (including abortive carpels, if any) usually 5-carpelled; follicles trigonous to subtrigonous, ca. 3.5 mm, glabrous or rarely with a few scattered trichomes, apex not beaked; endocarp glabrous. Seeds 1 per follicle and not paired with an abortive seed, ellipsoid to subreniform, 2.3-2.5 mm, attached in dehisced follicle to axile strip of pergamentaceous pericarp tissue; seed coat with thick inner layer of dense black sclerenchyma and spongy outer layer bounded externally by a shiny black pellicle.
