Annuals 10-40 cm tall. Roots yellow, stout. Stems erect, slender, subquadrangular, narrowly winged on angles, branched. Basal leaves withered at anthesis, short petiolate; leaf blade spatulate to oblong-spatulate, 1.5-3 cm × 6-7 mm including petiole, base narrowed, apex obtuse, midvein distinct. Stem leaves subsessile, linear to narrowly elliptic, 1.3-3.5 cm × 2-7 mm, base narrowed, apex acute, veins 1-3. Inflorescences usually reduced to a single flower. Flower 5merous. Pedicel erect, 1.5-4 cm, stout. Calyx tube 2-3 mm; lobes bractlike, unequal, 3 ovate and 0.9-2.5 cm × 6-12 mm, 2 ovate-lanceolate and 0.7-1.6 cm × 3-4 mm, base cordate, apex obtuse, reticulate veins purple. Corolla blue-purple, 2.5-3 cm in diam., tube 2-3 mm; lobes ovate-oblong to ovate, 0.9-1.6 cm × 3-5 mm, apex obtuse. Nectaries 2 per corolla lobe, radially elongated, with a narrow scale, and raised margin with many compound fimbriae. Filaments ca. 6 mm; anthers ellipsoid, ca. 2 mm. Ovary ellipsoid, 5-7 mm. Style ca. 2 mm; stigma lobes capitate. Fl. Aug-Oct.
