Plants tiny, green to blackish green or brownish, in dense tufts or mats. Stems very short, simple or branched, often radiculose at the base; central strand absent. Leaves contracted when dry, erect or widely spreading when moist, obovate to spathulate, rounded at the apex; margins plane, entire below, crenulate or denticulate above middle mostly by papillose cells; costa faint, not much differentiated from laminal cells, slender, ending above the leaf middle; upper leaf cells hexagonal, lax, pellucid, thin-walled, unipapillose to pluripapillose; basal cells rectangular, smooth, thin-walled; alar cells not differentiated. Dioicous. Gemmae often present. Perichaetial leaves enlarged, spathulate, somewhat sheathing. Setae straight, elongate, smooth; capsules erect, symmetric, ovoid; annuli none; opercula obliquely long conic-sublate; peristome none. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical.
