Plants small to medium-sized, to 2 cm high, bright green or dark green, in loose or dense tufts. Stems erect, simple, rarely irregularly branched; central strand very strong. Leaves often rosulate at the stem tips, contorted-curved when dry, spreading when moist, oblong-lanceolate to ligulate-lanceolate, broadly channeled above, acute at the apex, somewhat sheathing at the base; margins plane or weakly incurved, distinctly serrulate to near base, strongly serrate near apex; costa rather stout, percurrent; in cross section 2 stereid bands present; upper leaf cells quadrate to rounded-hexagonal, bistratose except marginal cells, smooth, but sometimes bulging ventrally; basal cells rectangular, thin-walled, smooth, hyaline. Dioicous or autoicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to stem leaves. Setae elongate, thin, straight; capsules erect or slightly inclined, cylindrical; peristome teeth 16 in pairs or 32 divided, linear-lanceolate to filamentose, erect or twisted, densely papillose, basal membrane low; annuli none or differentiated, consisting of 2 rows of cells; opercula conic-rostrate, with a long beak. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, yellowish brown, densely papillose.
