5. Dicranella divaricatula Besch., J. Bot. (Desvaux). 12: 283. 1898.

Plants slender, 1–3 cm high, yellowish brown, gregarious or in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple, rigid, somewhat radiculose at base. Leaves distant, erect or flexuose-spreading, linear-lanceolate, rather abruptly narrowed from a nearly triangular, nonsheathing base to a subulate acumen; margins plane, entire or only serrulate at the apex; costa percurrent to shortly excurrent, smooth at back; upper cells rounded rectangular; lower cells shorter, broader, and rectangular. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves sheathing at base, abruptly narrowed from the shoulder to a long subulate acumen. Setae straight, up to 1.5 cm long, yellowish; capsules erect, elongate-ovoid, up to 1 mm long, smooth when dry, without struma; opercula long-rostrate, nearly as long as the urns; annuli in 1 row of cells; peristome teeth short, divided to the middle, reddish and vertically striolate below. Spores not seen.

Type. China: Yunnan, Tali, Delavay 5250 (holotype PC).

Specimens examined: JIANGSU: Yi-xing Co., T. Cao 38834 (IFSBH). LIAONING: Kuan-dian Co., T. Cao 38494 (IFSBH). SICHUAN: Omei Shan (Mt.), coll. & no. unknown (IFSBH). YUNNAN: between Hokin and Tali, Delavay 920 (PC); also see the type information cited above. ZHEJIANG: Hangzhou City, D.-K. Li 203 (SHM).

Habitat: on wet or sandy soil near roadsides or streams; Distribution: endemic to China.

This species resembles Dicranella divaricata (Mitt.) Jaeg., but it differs from the latter by having leaves without sheathing bases. P.-C. Wu (1992) recently reported the latter species from Yunnan, but we could not confirm this report.
