Plants small to medium-sized, (5–)10–20 mm high, green, in dense tufts. Stems erect, simple or branched, radiculose at the base. Leaves contorted or crisped when dry, spreading when moist, oblong-elliptic to ligulate, 4–6 mm x 0.8–1.0 mm, abruptly acuminate at the apex, with a short apiculus; margins revolute in the lower half, plane, serrulate near the apex, bordered by 2–3 rows of linear, thick-walled cells, yellow; costa percurrent; upper cells larger, lax, irregularly hexagonal, thin-walled, densely covered with C-shaped papillae; basal cells rectangular, smooth, hyaline. Setae 2–3 cm long, yellowish red; capsules horizontal to inclined, obovoid-cylindrical, yellowish green to brown.

Habitat: on boulders, soil, or soil over rocks; Distribution: China, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Europe, North America, and Africa.
