Plants small to medium-sized, sometimes large, 10–40(–80) mm high, dark green to somewhat brownish, in loose or dense tufts. Stems erect or slantingly erect, usually branched. Leaves appressed when dry, strongly squarrose when moist, ovate-lanceolate, often longitudinally plicate and keeled; margins entire in the lower part, coarsely toothed in the upper part, usually not revolute; costa stout, ending just below the apex; upper leaf cells rounded quadrate to rounded hexagonal, thick-walled, with high, sometimes blunt papillae; basal cells oblong-rectangular to oblong-elliptic, usually papillose. Sporophytes unknown.
