Plants medium-sized to rather large, to 4 cm high, green to yellowish brown, in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple or irregularly branched. Leaves in three ranks, loose, widely spreading when dry, reflexed to squarrose when moist, ovate-lanceolate, strongly keeled above, sheathing at the base, somewhat decurrent; margins plane, entire; costa stout, excurrent in a short awn; upper leaf cells quadrate to short-rectangular or irregularly hexagonal, smooth, somewhat hyaline, irregularly thick-walled, trigonous, weakly porose; basal cells linear-rectangular, several rows of cells at the margins linear, smooth, thick-walled, often porose. Setae elongate, 5–8 mm high; capsules erect, ovoid; opercula conic-rostrate, with a long, oblique beak.
