Plants small to large, ca. 1–5 cm high, 1 cm wide, whitish green, in soft compact tufts or in cushions. Stems erect, simple or branched; central strand absent. Leaves erect-spreading, not twisted when dry, slightly falcate-secund, 4–7 mm long, up to 1.5 mm wide, narrowly to broadly lanceolate, gradually narrowed from an oblong-ovate base to subtubulous or channelled acumina, acute to bluntly mucronate at the apex, papillosely prorate on the dorsal side of acumina; laminal cells 1–2 rows on the upper parts of leaves enclosed by a marginal border of 1–2 rows of linear cells, 4–8 rows of narrowly rectangular to linear laminal cells (30–50 µm x 5–10 µm) near leaf base; in cross section, costal leucocysts in 2–3 layers on either side of a centrally located row of chlorocyst cells. Dioicous. Sporophytes not seen. [According to Yamaguchi (1993), setae 15–16 mm long; capsules inclined, ovoid to ellipsoid, 1.3–1.6 mm × 0.6–0.9 mm.]

Habitat: on tree trunks and bases, and moist rocks; Distribution: China and Japan.
