Plants rather robust, to 10 cm high, pale brown or tinged with pale purple, shiny when dry, in compact cushions. Stem cortex in (2–)3–4 layers, hyaline cells large, thin-walled, without fibrils, with a few large central pores, numerous small pores in commissural rows; central cylinder yellow, yellowish brown or reddish pink. Stem leaves ca. 1.8 mm × 0.70–0.85 mm, oblong isosceles-triangular, gradually narrowed to an involute, blunt, and dentate apex; borders narrowly and evenly differentiated to the base; hyaline cells narrowly rhomboidal, fibrillose in the upper half, rarely to the base, often divided, with numerous half-elliptic or rounded pores often in commissural rows on the dorsal surface, with a few larger, rounded pores on the ventral surface. Branches in fascicles of 4–5, with 2–3 spreading. Branch leaves 1.5–2.0 mm × 0.8–0.9 mm, large, oblong ovate-lanceolate, appressed at leaf base, reflexed or sub-squarrose in the upper part, gradually narrowed and involute to a blunt, denticulate apex; borders differentiated; hyaline cells narrowly rhomboidal, mostly with membrane pleats and somewhat fibrillose, with a few large, rounded, unringed pores near leaf base and margins on the ventral surface, with numerous half-elliptic, ringed pores in commissural rows and a few large, rounded pores in opposite pairs on the dorsal surface; green cells in cross section triangular, exposed on the ventral surface, enclosed by hyaline cells on the dorsal surface. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves large, ovate-lanceolate; hyaline cells broadly rhomboidal, often divided, withour fibrils and pores. Spores yellowish, roughly papillose, 19–21 µm in diameter.

Habitat: in bogs or on wet ground, bases of trees and rotten wood in warm, moist habitats; Distribution: China, Japan, Himalayas, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and New Guinea.
