Plants medium-sized, usually to 30 mm high, sometimes larger, in dense tufts. Stems erect, often branched. Leaves appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, lanceolate, acuminate at the apex; costa stout, percurrent, highly papillose on the back of costa; margins entire, but appearing to be serrulate due to papillose marginal cells; upper leaf cells rounded hexagonal to rounded-quadrate, thick-walled, pluripapillose; basal cells irregularly rectangular, smooth. Sporophytes not seen.

Habitat: usually on calcareous rocks or cliffs, occasionally on ground or tree bases in forests; also on rocks in glaciers; Distribution: China, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Russia, Europe, northern Africa, and North America.
